When it comes to westward expansion, the mid-19th century Gold Rush — which saw more than 300,000 people head west in hopes of finding gold — is an undeniably important milestone in America's history. But, from the early Spanish conquistadors to the Natives who lived on the lands of the Old West long before that, fortune-seeking pioneers certainly weren't the first to explore the western portion of the U.S. Fast-forward to today and some of the prettiest places in the world can be found on the West Coast.
